Reading Reflection #2

How to Fail at Almost Everything
and Still Win Big
Scott Adams

1. The general theme of this book is that failure is something that should be embraced rather than completely dreaded, since failures can teach you great lessons. My biggest takeaway from the book is that failure can beneficial to the entrepreneurial process, since by inviting/embracing failure you can then "pick its pocket" so that you can create an optimized product in the end.

2. The book connected with and enhanced my learning in ENT3003 by making it clear that creating/launching a product is not a seamless project. You often have to completely redo/rethink portions of your idea/project after inside and outside forces make it clear that the product is not optimal.

3. Exercise Assignment: Describe a time that you worked very hard on something and ended up failing. Did you learn or take away anything from this experience? What would you change about your approach if you were to try again?

4. The biggest surprise to me was his emphasis on the importance of being selfish. He mentions that looking after yourself should be your first priority, which conflicts with the ideal of selflessness that has been pushed in nearly every other aspect of my life.

  1. Hey Katherine,
I think the book you read is very interesting and it coincides with the book I read too. The book I read talks about how failure is part of business because all business ventures require risks and therefore some failure. It sounds like the book you read is very insightful and helpful for any businessperson or anyone who takes this class.

  2. Hi Katherine,

I also read How to Fail at Everything and Still Win Big by Scott Adams. I thought the book was very insightful, especially regarding failure. Like you said, failure should be embraced, as it is a necessary part of discovering who you are as an entrepreneur. I really like your idea for the assignment, as it will put a students past failures in a larger perspective for them, something we could all grow from!
